The Barrel Bros’ Review

The nose of Old Grand-Dad 114 is a delightful mix of dark red fruits, reminiscent of plums, paired with a touch of oak. There's a smokiness that evokes memories of sitting around a campfire, and a sweet, syrupy note that rounds out the experience. Additionally, you’ll notice distinct cola, grainy butterscotch, and hints of Tootsie Rolls.

The Palate is light with a noticeable burn that reveals its 114 proof. The oak and char flavors take center stage, but the sweetness of sweet raisins and cherry cola adds a delightful balance. Dark chocolate and a sweet mouthfeel with butterscotch hints further enhance the flavor profile.

While the finish doesn’t linger long, it offers a pleasant, sweet oak flavor. The lingering dark chocolate and a brief but satisfying sweetness make you crave another sip.

Old Grand-Dad 114 is a standout, budget-friendly bourbon that hits all the right notes for whiskey enthusiasts, especially those who prefer higher-proof pours. Its rich, flavorful profile and well-balanced nature make it a great buy at an MSRP of $25-30. This bourbon is a staple on many whiskey lovers' shelves for good reason. Smooth, flavorful, and affordable—it's a solid choice across the board.

The Rye Guy Says

THE NOSE:
I really enjoyed the nose on this pour! I primarily got dark red fruits, similar to plum, paired with a bit of oak.

There was also a decent amount of smokiness that brought a hint of nostalgia for me. I wouldn’t say it smelled exactly like a campfire, but it certainly reminded me of sitting around one.

Finally, there was a sweetness to it on the tail end reminiscent of syrup.

THE TASTE:
The mouthfeel is light and juicy with a decent burn on the finish. Not in a bad alcohol way, but the proof is apparent.

The oak and char flavors do take a more prominent role, but I was happy that the sweetness didn’t completely get pushed out.

I got notes of sweet raisins. The char flavor does move forward on the back end of the palate.

THE FINISH:
The finish doesn't last very long or sit in the mouth well, but the flavor is very good.

This is probably the only real downside to the pour, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s a complaint.

It’s pretty one-note, sweet oak, but that's a pretty solid flavor to end on for bourbon!

BUY OR PASS?
There is a good reason why this bottle is fairly well known as being a great budget-friendly purchase. It’s just so solid across the board, especially for those whiskey drinkers who like higher-proof pours.

It hits so many of the classic bourbon flavors and even hints at those older rickhouse cellar notes too. Smooth, flavorful, and well-balanced; It’s just a great buy.

THE NOSE:
You’ll get a distinct aroma of cola, some grainy butterscotch, and a hint of Tootsie Rolls.

It’s a unique and inviting combination.

THE TASTE:
That cherry cola flavor from the nose comes through beautifully.

You’ll also notice dark notes of chocolate and a sweet mouthfeel with hints of butterscotch.

THE FINISH:
The finish is nice, with the darkness and chocolate from the palate lingering, but it’s a bit too brief, leaving you wanting more.

BUY OR PASS?
This is good bourbon drinking! It’s nothing overly complex, but you’re getting a ton of flavor for the bargain price of $25-30 MSRP.

There’s a reason most whiskey lovers have this bottle on their shelves!
