Stephen - The Rye Guy
Palate: Dark Fruit, Spice, Brown Sugar
Hello friend! You’ve found yourself on “The Rye Guy’s” page, and while I do still enjoy bourbon I find myself reaching for a good rye first. It's a touch more rebellious, a touch spicy, and a touch more sophisticated!
My favorite description I've heard of a good Rye whiskey is, “It’s like opening an old book or walking into a library.”
My whiskey journey didn't start there though. I first discovered the whiskey profile mixing Evan Williams with Coke in college. Hey, we all have to start somewhere!
Some additional things I've noticed about my palette that may provide insight when reading reviews:
My preferred proof point for a whiskey tends to fall within 110-120.
My preferred age for a whiskey tends to fall between 8-12 years. Older than that, and there is a chance it will be too oaky for me!
I've not been wowed by any wheated bourbons, and I have limited experience with single malts.
I do not enjoy heavily smokey whiskeys or whiskeys with a pete-forward profile, which tend to accompany Irish whiskey or scotch.
Final remarks, whiskey is meant to be shared in the company of others! Your experience of a bottle will be influenced by the time, place, and company around you! Happy pours!
