The Barrel Bros’ Review

Stranahan’s Single Barrel opens with a nose that is sweet and fruity — Welch's grape juice and tart berries dominate. Vanilla salt water taffy and strawberry add a creamy, nostalgic touch. There’s also a light maltiness that hints at honeycomb cereal and graham crackers.

The palate is where the whiskey truly shines for fruit lovers. Blueberry pipe tobacco and fig newton flavors lead the way, offering a dark, sweet flavor. The mouthfeel is light and well-balanced, with hints of honey, vanilla, and caramel. There is a slight sharpness on the first sip, but it quickly smooths out, becoming a pleasant, easy sipper.

The grape and berry notes carry through to the finish, lingering without becoming medicinal. A touch of salted dark chocolate adds a bit of richness, though the finish is relatively short. While it leaves a pleasant amount of honey and vanilla, it doesn’t stick around as long as some might hope.

Stranahan’s Single Barrel offers a unique and fruit-forward experience, ideal for whiskey drinkers who enjoy bold, sweet flavors. At its $60 MSRP, it’s a solid choice for those looking for something a little different. However, if you find it on sale, it becomes an even more tempting option. While not the most complex pour, its enjoyable fruitiness and easy-drinking nature make it well worth a try.

The Rye Guy Says

Score: 8/10
Value: 4.5/5

THE NOSE:
Welch's grape juice, it’s sweet but balanced with a dry tart berry note.

There is also a hint of vanilla salt water taffy and strawberry.

THE TASTE:
The palate is like a blueberry flavored pipe tobacco or a fig newton.

It reads sweet, but doesn’t punch you in the face. It feels really well balanced with the sweet dark fruit profile.

THE FINISH:
The finish continues with the grape profile, almost bordering on grape cough syrup, but it is able to avoid that bite.

Perhaps a bit of salted dark chocolate here as well.

BUY OR PASS?
It’s a fantastic pour for whiskey drinkers who really want those fruity notes. Those happen to be some of my favorites, so I really enjoyed it.

Not much woodiness to find here.

The Hunter Says

Score: 6/10
Value: 3.5/5

stranahans-single-barrel-rating

THE NOSE:
The first impression is all about malt and honey, reminding me a little of honeycomb cereal.

There’s also a bit of wafer and graham cracker, which adds a light sweetness to the mix.

THE TASTE:
It sits nicely on the palate with a light sweetness—honey, vanilla, and caramel all coming through.

The texture is light, not syrupy, which makes it easy to sip.

There’s a bit of harshness upfront, but it mellows quickly into something much more pleasant.

THE FINISH:
The honey and vanilla linger for a little while, but I wish the finish stayed around just a bit longer.

It’s satisfying but fades quicker than I’d like.

BUY OR PASS?
I usually enjoy these bottles, and Stranahan’s Single Barrel has delivered some fantastic pours in the past. Tonight’s, however, felt a little flat—nothing bad, just not as lively or complex as I’ve come to expect.
