The Barrel Bros’ Review

The nose of the Sagamore Spirit Rye Double Oak offers a delightful combination of sweet cherry cola and chopped firewood, with the oak and wood notes subtly enhancing the profile. Typical rye aromas are subdued but present, featuring pine and fig, alongside hints of chocolate and bright fruits like cherry, strawberry, and orange. The double oak char emerges with time, adding complexity.

The mouthfeel is silky and mellow, with the proof well hidden. The palate delivers a balanced mix of fig and rye spice, with a slight dryness that contrasts with the initial sweetness. The woodiness leans more towards pine than oak, complemented by a general sweetness and rye spice that will appeal to rye enthusiasts.

The transition from palate to finish is seamless, maintaining the same flavor profile. The finish builds on the sweetness and char, culminating in a maple syrup-like flavor. Darker notes of caramel and butterscotch make a surprising appearance, lingering pleasantly and lasting longer than expected for a bottle in the $55-60 price range.

Sagamore Spirit Rye Double Oak is a standout rye whiskey that consistently delivers a satisfying experience. Priced at a reasonable $55-60 MSRP, it's an excellent choice for both seasoned rye drinkers and those new to the category.

The balanced profile and approachable proof make it a great bottle to enjoy and share, and it remains a favorite on many shelves.

The Rye Guy Says

Score: 8/10
Value: 5/5

THE NOSE:
The nose gives a soft sweet profile that reminds me of cherry cola and chopped firewood.

The oak and wood profile is present, but it does take a back seat to the sweeter notes.

The typical rye notes are pretty subdued, but I can still identify some of that pine and fig.

THE TASTE:
The mouthfeel is silky and mellow, and the proof is really hidden.

The palate is not as sweet and a bit more dry than the nose would suggest. Initially, I got a pretty fig and rye spice profile.

As far as the woodiness, I get more pine than oak but both are present. All the flavors here are well-balanced.

THE FINISH:
It’s actually pretty difficult to identify when the transition from palate to finish takes place.

The finish kinda just subtly arrives. It certainly doesn’t change profile much from the palate.

The sweetness and the char really build, creating almost a maple syrup flavor.

BUY OR PASS?
This is one of my favorite bottles. It’s not too difficult to find, the price is very approachable, and it consistently hits the notes that I enjoy.

It doesn’t stay off my shelf for long, and it’s a bottle that I really enjoy introducing to friends!

The Hunter Says

Score: 7/10
Value: 4/5

THE NOSE:
The nose hits you with a sweet rye spice, true to its rye nature.

Unlike bourbons, you won't find those darker notes here. Instead, expect bright fruits like cherry, strawberry, and orange.

There’s also a hint of chocolate, and if you spend time with the glass, the char from the double oak comes through nicely.

THE TASTE:
The taste brings a general sweetness paired with a pleasing amount of rye spice. It's a rye for rye lovers.

However, if you prefer bourbon, you might find it a bit lacking in depth.

THE FINISH:
The finish is where the magic happens. Here, the darker, caramel, and butterscotch sweetness make an appearance, lingering pleasantly.

It lasts longer than you’d expect from a bottle in the $55-60 range.

BUY OR PASS?
At $55-60 MSRP, Sagamore Double Oaked is a solid choice that won’t disappoint. The Barrel Bros have owned multiple batches of this bottle, and while there's some variation between them, it's consistently a good pour.

It's a fantastic option for introducing someone to rye. And with only 96.6 proof, you can enjoy a few glasses and still be feeling fine!
